Android users have been urged to delete 17 apps that could potentially be stealing some personal information from smartphones.
Experts at ZScaler have issued a warning over 17 dangerous apps that have been found to be stealing text messages, contact lists and device information.
The apps, which range from translation programmes, PDF scanner and messaging software, contain malware called Joker.
Zscaler researcher Viral Gandhi said that the malware continues to attack Android devices despite awareness over its dangers.
In a blog post, he wrote: “Joker is one of the most prominent malware families that continually targets Android devices.
“Despite awareness of this particular malware, it keeps finding its way into Google’s official application market by employing changes in its code, execution methods, or payload-retrieving techniques.”
Google have since deleted the apps from its Google Play Store, but they have been downloaded onto devices around 120,000 times.
Android users have been urged to be careful over which apps they download in the future.
Mr Gandhi added: “We recommend paying close attention to the permission list in the apps that you install on your Android device.
“Always watch out for the risky permissions related to SMS, call logs, contacts, and more. Reading the comment or reviews on the app page also helps identify compromised apps.”
