Android users to be blocked from loading web pages by new upgrade

Android phones across the country are about to run into a problem that will stop users from opening web pages.

The problem will hit any device running Android 7.1.1 or older and is down to new security features.

New systems are being rolled out to protect web pages from hackers and virus, reports The Echo, but older Android phones won't be able to access web pages after the upgrade.

The software update will come into force after January 11 and will stop the loading of all pages protected by Let’s Encrypt – which includes Wikipedia, Open Street Map, Metro, Variety and the New York Post.

It's estimated that the problem will affect around 220 million websites.

More than 34 per cent of Android phones are running the old software that will stop them getting to the sites.

The workaround is to install and use Mozilla's Firefox browser on your phone instead as it uses its own software to trust and load sites.

But apps depending on older software won't be able to take advantage of this fix.
