Andrey Koreshkov scored Bellator 229 main event a draw: Don’t think I lost but can’t say I won

Andrey Koreshkov believes the judges got it wrong when declaring him the loser of the Bellator 229 main event against Lorenz Larkin.

Koreshkov (22-4 MMA, 13-4 BMMA) came out on the wrong end of a narrow split decision against Larkin (21-7 MMA, 3-2 BMMA) on Friday in the welterweight headliner, which took place at Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, Calif. It was a highly competitive fight, and ultimately the result did not go in his favor.

The former Bellator champ did good work in the first, hurting Larkin and mustering an argument for a 10-8 round. Larkin came back, though, winning the second round clearly and seemingly edging out a tight third frame. Koreshkov thought he did enough and said post-fight that, at worst, it should’ve been a draw (via Instagram):

Как раз в таких сражениях спортсмен растёт, если в случае поражения правильно делает выводы! Я не считаю, что бой проиграл, но и сказать, что я победил, тоже не могу! Dear friends, my battle has passed! Of course, the result does not please me (defeat by a separate decision of the judges).

But I’m not ashamed of the battle! Just in such battles, an athlete grows if, in the event of a defeat, he correctly draws conclusions! I don’t think that I lost the battle, but I can’t say that I won either! A fair decision would be to award a draw, but this is my opinion.

With the defeat, Koreshkov has lost twice in a three-fight span for the first time in his career.

The Russian has the most fights in Bellator welterweight history (17), but at just 29 years old he seemingly still has a lot of life remaining in his MMA career. Now he’ll have to attempt to rebound from unchartered territory.
