Andrey Arshavin names Arsenal and Chelsea stars as best team-mate and toughest opponents

Andrey Arshavin hailed a former Arsenal star as the best team-mate he has ever played with - while he named two ex-Chelsea players as his toughest opponents.

Arshavin made 145 appearances for the Gunners after joining Arsene Wenger's side in 2009, scoring 31 goals and laying on 46 assists.

The winger played with the likes of Robin van Persie, Samir Nasri, Aaron Ramsey and current Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta before returning to his hometown club Zenit St Petersburg in 2013.

But for Arshavin, one former team-mate sticks out as the best for his ability to pick out a perfect pass - and that's Cesc Fabregas.

"Best team-mate? Let's say Fàbregas," said Arshavin in an interview with UEFA. "He can deliver the ball from any point to another in the right moment and with the right timing."

He said the "biggest joker" at Arsenal was Emmanuel Eboué, adding: "He was very funny, and I liked his humour; it was Rossisski [Russian]."

Asked who his most feared opponent was, the 39-year-old said he wasn't afraid of any defenders - but described former Chelsea stars Branislav Ivanović and John Terry as the toughest to face.

"Most feared defenders? I didn't really have that type of defender," he said. "But it was still really difficult to play against Ivanović and John Terry, if we're talking about England. If we're talking about the Russian league, [Jerry] Tchuisse [from Spartak Moscow]."

Arshavin made 25 of his Arsenal appearances alongside former midfielder Arteta, and he gave his former team-mate some advice as the Gunners boss targets Europa League success this season.

Arteta's side will take a 3-1 lead into the home leg of their Europa League last-16 clash against Olympiakos, despite defensive errors against the Greek side on Thursday.

And Arshavin said Arteta must ensure his players gel as a team if they want to go all the way in the competition.

"Comparing with their performance in the English league, of course, it’s completely different in the Europa League," said the former Russia international, who won the UEFA Cup with Zenit in 2008.

"Arsenal were so strong [in the group stage]. We went through the group stage very easily, but now, of course, we’re expecting much stronger opposing teams.

"I like some young players like [Bukayo] Saka, but you know, always, if you want to win, you have to talk about the team performance. It's more important.

"One player can of course decide one game, maybe two games, but to go all the way through, you must be strong as a team. This is a point for Mikel Arteta: to get everyone together."
