Andrey Arshavin addresses the UEFA Cup 'bribe' claim that dogged Zenit before Rangers Final

Andrey Arshavin has laughed off suggestions Zenit St Petersburg were guilty of paying bribes on their way to UEFA Cup glory against Rangers.

The Russian side defeated Walter Smith 's men 2-0 in Manchester in 2008, with Arshavin named Man of the Match.

Zenit had reached that final by thrashing Bayern Munich 4-0 in the semi-final second leg, and there have since been unfounded claims that bribes were paid.

Now though Arshavin has broken his silence on that talk and completely dismissed any suggestion of wrongdoing.

The former Arsenal man said: "I keep hearing people saying that we bought that game. The truth is we were fantastic that night.

"Do you know that was Oliver Kahn's last ever game in European football? How much do you think it would have cost to make sure he lost it?

"And if it was necessary to get at Oliver Kahn, how much do you think we would have had to pay the rest of the Bayern team? Bastian Schweinsteiger...can you imagine!

"This is crazy nonsense that has followed us for years. But I have actually found it funny for a long time.

"Honestly, can you imagine the Bayern players asking how much money they needed to throw the game!"
