Andrew Whitworth announces he’ll return for 14th season in 2019

Andrew Whitworth has been one of the most valuable players for the Los Angeles Rams the last two seasons despite being the oldest offensive lineman in football. He’ll retain that title in 2019 after announcing on Twitter that he’s returning for a 14th season.

Whitworth sent a semi-cryptic tweet on Tuesday with a quote from John A. Shed, confirming he’ll be back with the Rams next season.

The Rams also shared this tweet in response to the great news.

Whitworth considered retirement and took time to weigh all his options after the Rams lost in Super Bowl LIII, but he’s not ready to hang up his cleats just yet. This is huge news for Los Angeles, which gets to keep an elite left tackle for one more season.

The veteran left tackle has one year left on his contract and will have a cap hit of $16.7 million. That’s a large chunk of change, but it beats the alternative of the Rams having to replace a Pro Bowl-level left tackle in one offseason.

Whitworth, 37, has spent the last two years in Los Angeles and won’t turn 38 until December. After finally winning a playoff game and reaching the Super Bowl, he’ll give winning a Lombardi one more shot before likely hanging up his cleats after this season.
