DJ and producer Andrew Weatherall has died at the age of 56 after a pulmonary embolism.

A statement from his publicists on Twitter said: “We are deeply sorry to announce that Andrew Weatherall, the noted DJ and musician passed away in the early hours of this morning, Monday 17th February 2020, at Whipps Cross Hospital, London.

“The cause of death was a pulmonary embolism. He was being treated in hospital but unfortunately the blood clot reached his heart. His death was swift and peaceful.

Stars from the music world soon rushed to pay tribute with BBC Radio 6Music presenter Lauren Laverne writing: "Absolutely heartbroken to hear about Weatherall.

"A wonderful person who contributed so much to music and British culture. The world is a poorer place today."

Others who posted messages online included Tim Burgess and writer Irvine Welsh.

The Trainspotting author wrote: "Absolutely distraught to hear this terrible news. Andrew was a longtime friend, collaborator and one of most talented persons I’ve known.

"Also one of the nicest. Genius is an overworked term but I’m struggling to think of anything else that defines him."

Weatherall rose to fame in the late '90s, working with Happy Mondays and New Order.

He also worked on the production of Primal Scream's Mercury prize-winning and era-defining album Screamadelica.

His illustrious career in production and remixing saw him work with acts including Beth Orton and Bjork, while in 2009, he released his own solo album, A Pox on the Pioneers.
