Andrew Tate to be released from Romanian jail

Andrew Tate and his brother are to be released into house arrest, a Romanian judge has ruled.

The former kickboxer, 36, is a British-US citizen who is well-known for his misogynistic views.

Tate was detained in Romania with his brother Tristan on suspicion of organised crime and human trafficking.

The ruling by the Romanian Court of Appeal replaces the latest period of custody, which had been due to end on April 29.

Two associates, Georgiana Naghel and Luana Radu, are also being released into house arrest.

All four have been ordered to stay in the buildings where they live, and will not be able to leave without judicial permission.

The Tate brothers have been detained since December and are being investigated on allegations of rape, people trafficking and forming an organised crime group. Both have denied wrongdoing.

Lawyers for Mr Tate had argued that keeping him in custody was unnecessary when house arrest was available.

Romanian prosecutors have said they have identified six alleged victims since investigations began last April.

However, no charges have yet been brought against the Tate brothers or two Romanian associates who were arrested alongside them.

Tate who has been based mainly in Romania since 2017, is an online influencer and self-described misogynist who has built up a following of millions of fans, particularly among young men drawn to his hyper-macho image.

The former kickboxer first came to public attention after appearing on TV show Big Brother in 2016.
