Andrew Scott to star in Noёl Coward comedy Present Laughter at the Old Vic

Andrew Scott will star in the Old Vic’s new production of Present Laughter in the summer.

Opening at the end of June, Noёl Coward’s semi-autobiographical comedy follows an actor as he prepares to embark on a tour overseas and faces an immediately impending mid-life crisis.

Scott, who is currently on TV screens in Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Fleabag, recently appeared on the Old Vic stage in solo show Sea Wall as part of the theatre's 200th anniversary celebrations last year.

He takes to the stage alongside Indira Varma, Sophie Thompson, Luke Thallon and Suzie Toase, with Rob Howell designing, lighting by Hugh Vanstone and sound by Simon Baker.

OId Vic artistic director Matthew Warchus, who previously worked with Scott on acclaimed film Pride, directs. He said: “Originally titled Sweet Sorrow, Noël Coward’s most autobiographical work is a giddy and passionate observation of narcissism, hero worship and loneliness. Most of my favourite plays are comedies with added emotional dimensions and Present Laughter is a laugh-out-loud sex comedy with, I think, surprising depths.

“I’m delighted to be working with Andrew Scott again, together with what promises to be a cast of outstanding comic actors.”

Present Laughter runs from June 25-August 10 at the Old Vic Theatre.
