Andrew Mountbatton-Windsor Investigated Over Alleged 2002 Incident During Royal Ascot

CONTENT WARNING: This article discusses sexual misconduct.

Police in the UK are looking into a fresh allegation involving Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, with reports claiming he may have behaved inappropriately towards a woman at Royal Ascot more than 20 years ago.

According to The Sunday Times, the alleged incident is said to have happened during the 2002 Royal Ascot in Berkshire. The event is a key part of the royal family’s calendar, and that particular year marked Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee.

It’s not yet clear whether the allegation was reported at the time or raised more recently.

The report comes as Thames Valley Police (TVP) continue a wider investigation into Mountbatten-Windsor. He was arrested in February on his 66th birthday and questioned under criminal caution over suspected misconduct in public office, linked to his former role as a UK trade envoy.

Thames Valley Police said they cannot go into specifics of the investigation, but said they “are following all reasonable lines of inquiry”.

Police have also stressed that their investigation goes beyond earlier reports. Detectives have asked anyone with information about possible offences — including sexual misconduct, corruption, fraud, or the sharing of confidential information — to come forward.

Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright said, “Misconduct in public office is a crime that can take different forms, making this a complex investigation.”

The inquiry partly stems from documents released by the US Department of Justice connected to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Investigators are looking into claims Mountbatten-Windsor may have shared confidential information, which he denies.

Police have already searched his home in Norfolk, as well as the Windsor estate where he lived for many years.

Separately, officers are assessing a claim from a US-based woman who alleges she was taken to Windsor in 2010 for sexual purposes. That has not yet become a full criminal investigation, but police have contacted her through her lawyer.

“Should she wish to report this to police it will be taken seriously and handled with care, sensitivity and respect for her privacy,” police said.

Several UK police forces are now examining information linked to Epstein, including claims involving flights into the UK. Investigators are also dealing with delays in getting original documents from US authorities, with formal legal requests likely to take time.

Mountbatten-Windsor has repeatedly denied all wrongdoing.
