Andrew Luck’s massive contract is becoming a bargain

Another offseason goes by, another offseason where Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck moves down the list of the highest-paid players at his position.

It wasn’t always like that. Fans remember a time not too long ago—three years to be exact—where Luck was the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL when he signed a five-year extension in 2016. It was the richest contract in the history of the game.

Now, Luck isn’t even in the top 10 of average annual salary.

Following the four-year extension for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz, Luck is now the 11th-highest paid quarterback in the league when looking at annual pay.

  1. Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks ($35 million)
  2. Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers ($34 million)
  3. Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers ($33.5 million)
  4. Carson Wentz, Philadelphia Eagles ($32 million)
  5. Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons ($30 million)
  6. Kirk Cousins, Minnesota Vikings ($28 million)
  7. Jimmy Garoppolo, San Francisco 49ers ($27.5 million)
  8. Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions ($27 million)
  9. Derek Carr, Oakland Raiders ($25 million)
  10. Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints ($25 million)
  11. Andrew Luck, Indianapolis Colts ($24.6 million)

What was once thought of as a potentially restricting contract is now arguably the biggest bargain in the league. There aren’t many quarterbacks on this list the Colts would want over Luck.

Of course, the increasing salary cap has a lot to do with the fact that teams can pay quarterbacks more money now than they ever could. Still, Luck’s contract is looking like a blessing entering its fourth season.

The Colts have Luck locked up through the 2021 season, and it’s likely he will continue to move down this list until he becomes a free agent again—or at least until they get another extension done.

With Luck still in his prime, another massive contract is likely on its way in a few years. Until then, though, his current contract is an absolute bargain.
