It has been nearly six months since Andrew Luck shocked the world and announced his retirement just a few weeks before the Indianapolis Colts were scheduled to begin the 2019 season.
It is a decision that Luck has stood by and while he isn’t coming back to lead the Colts, his father Oliver is leading the newly re-branded XFL, which made its debut last weekend.
We’ve heard almost nothing about Luck since his retirement, which is something that should have been expected given his personality. While on the Dan Patrick Show, his father commented on how easy it was for his son to get out of the spotlight.
“He’s one of those millennials that isn’t involved in social media. I guess there’s still a handful of those guys out there. As a result, it was very easy for him to just get out of the spotlight and live his own life,” Oliver said. “He’s Mr. Mom right now. He and his wife had their first child about three months ago. He’s doing a lot of babysitting.”
While looking after your own child is not babysitting, that’s beside the point. Luck made the decision to hang up his spikes after going through a difficult injury cycle that took a took both physically and mentally. He wound up leaving the game in his prime and at the age of 29.
Though he was steadfast in his belief that leaving the game he loves was the right move, that doesn’t mean it was always an easy decision.
“He did sort of lament to me that the Colts had such a good offense as he was working through his own issues,” Oliver said. “Chris Ballard has done an excellent job. That is my GM of the year.”
The Colts are moving forward without Luck, who is finding the joy in life being a father and exploring new hobbies.
What those hobbies are will likely remain a mystery as Luck’s way out of the spotlight came almost naturally.
