Andrew Lloyd Webber sends cease-and-desist letter to Trump over use of Cats song Memory at rallies

What do Panic! At The Disco, Pavarotti and the musical Cats have in common?

Aside from being iconic milestones in musical history, all have been designated off-limits for Donald Trump to play at his political rallies.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s team have reportedly sent a cease-and-desist letter to the US president over using the song Memory from his famous musical.

The musical theatre impresario’s representatives confirmed to Page Six that his theatre company Really Useful Group sent the letter to Trump, following a request from Cats veteran Betty Buckley, who played Grizabella in the original Broadway production and whose voice is featured in the song.

Last month, Buckley retweeted a news report of the family of Tom Petty sending Trump a cease-and-desist letter, saying: “You should do the same @OfficialALW! Seriously!! #Dotherighthing.”

Buckley has been calling for Lloyd Webber to take legal action over the use of Memory since as far back as 2017, when she tweeted him a video of the song playing at a rally saying “you've got to say NO to this!”

They join a growing list of musicians who have objected to Trump using their music, including Adele, Rihanna, the Rolling Stones and Elton John.
