Andrew ignores invitation to speak to US Congress about links to Jeffrey Epstein

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has not responded to a request from the United States Congress to be interviewed about his relationship with disgraced sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Andrew was stripped of his royal titles over his connection to Epstein by his brother, King Charles, last month. This came after allegations made by chief Epstein accuser, Virginia Giuffre, intensified following the publication of her posthumous memoir – allegations which Andrew has always denied.

The former prince received an invitation from Democratic members of the House oversight committee asking him to sit for a deposition, as part of an investigation into how the Epstein case was handled by the Trump administration.

The committee has expressed disappointment that they had not received a response from Andrew by their deadline of November 20.

One of the 13 members of Congress who signed the letter, Suhas Subramanyam, said that Andrew “has been hiding from us, and I think he will continue to try to hide from people doing meaningful investigations of this matter”.

Suhas said he still hopes others close to Andrew may come forward with information on the matter.

As Andrew is not a US citizen, the committee does not have the power to subpoena Andrew. Additionally, the letter was not signed by Republican members of the committee, leaving Democrats with limited political bargaining power.

Several former government officials have testified before the committee, including Bill Barr, Trump’s former attorney-general, Alex Acosta, a lawyer who presided over Epstein’s conviction in 2008, and was later appointed as labour secretary.

More high-profile figures were expected to testify last month, including Bill and Hillary Clinton, before the 54-day government shutdown stalled matters. A new date has not been set yet.

The oversight committee has committed to continuing to investigate allegations of abuse by Andrew, whether he cooperates or not.

Last week, the House of Democrats revealed that Andrew’s name was listed as one of the passengers on Epstein’s private jet. This came with financial documents listing possible evidence of payment from Epstein for “massages for Andrew”.

Evidence in the form of emails has also emerged indicating Andrew had his security dig up dirt on Giuffre after she went public in 2024.

In the invitation sent to Andrew on November 6, Suhas and fellow Congress member Robert Garcia wrote: “It has been publicly reported that your friendship with Mr Epstein began in 1999 and that you remained close through and after his 2008 conviction for procuring minors for prostitution.

“It has also been reported that you traveled with Epstein to his New York residence, the Queen’s residence at Balmoral, and to Mr Epstein’s private island in the US Virgin Islands, where you have been accused of abusing minors,” they said.

“This close relationship with Mr Epstein, coupled with the recently revealed 2011 email exchange, in which you wrote to him ‘we are in this together’, further confirms our suspicion that you may have valuable information about the crimes committed by Mr Epstein and his co-conspirators.”

Just this week, President Trump signed in a bill which would see the long-awaited release of the Epstein files from his administration’s possession, after the motion was overwhelmingly voted in by the House and Senate.

Recently released documents show that Andrew was listed as a passenger on Epstein’s private jet to his private island (US District Attorney’s Office)

Trump historically opposed the release of the files and on Sunday, switched positions, urging Republicans to vote for the bill.

The Department of Justice must release the documents within 30 days.

Last week, a cache of 23,000 documents from Epstein’s estate was published, in which Andrew’s name appears multiple times.

Several names mentioned in the documents have publicly apologised for their relationship with Epstein, including Clinton’s former treasury secretary and ex-president of Harvard University Larry Summers.

Summers announced he would also resign from the board of directors at OpenAI, amid an internal investigation into his connection with Epstein at Harvard.
