Andrew Conway and Jordan Larmour on standby to start Ireland's World Cup opener

Andrew Conway and Jordan Larmour are on standby to start in Ireland's World Cup opener.

Conway is ready to replace Rob Kearney after the full-back suffered tightness in his calf in training this week, while Larmour is in line to replace Keith Earls on the wing.

Ireland assistant boss Andy Farrell said yesterday that both Kearney and Earls were still in contention for selection.

However there's a real danger that both will sit out the clash in Yokohama.

"There's a few protocols that they need to go to, so that's what we need to adhere to with the medical staff," said Farrell.

"But they're very happy. They're available, so we've obviously another session to go on Friday.

"The game's on Sunday, so we're building nicely. We wouldn’t take  risks unnecessarily. We’ve got to act accordingly to what is put in front of us by the medics and make a decision on the back of that."

Asked if Conway and Larmour were ready to take their chance on the world stage, Farrell replied:  "Like I said to you before the last Welsh game, when the squad's narrowed down to 31 you start seeing the little units gelling together and everyone starts benefiting from that.

"And they're certainly putting their best foot forward to contribute in all the areas of their expertise.

"Jordan's a young man but where he's come in the last couple of years is remarkable.

"They don't see themselves as part of the squad, they see themselves as team members that are building for something special hopefully at the weekend."

And asked what more can be expected of Ireland against the Scots, Farrell said: “We would expect quite a bit.

"We have been gearing up for this game. Our whole pre-season has obviously been building to certain parts to get different stages and bases of skill level and fitness etc.

“Our planning has been building up to a good start in this competition, so you would except for us to hit the ground running”.
