Andrei Kanchelskis has identified the type of manager he thinks Manchester United should appoint to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
United sacked Solskjaer on Sunday after nearly three years in charge, following just one win in their last seven Premier League games, a run that included five loses and culminated in a 4-1 defeat away to Watford on Saturday.
Michael Carrick has been announced as the Red Devils’ caretaker manager for the foreseeable future, as the club begins its search for its new manager, with Mauricio Pochettino, Brendan Rodgers and Zinedine Zidane amongst the favourites.
Former United winger Kanchelskis has now had his say on the situation, jokingly telling Soccer Russia that Sir Alex Ferguson should come back before going onto outline who he really thinks should take the reins at Old Trafford.
He said: “It was a fair resignation. Everything is natural since he [ Solskjaer ] did not show results. It was predictable, like we started the season well, then something went wrong.
“Who can achieve results with this team? Ferguson (laughs). In my opinion, an Italian coach would be a good fit for this team, but the decision will be made by the board of directors, the management of the club, but he must be a high-status person with a name.
“For them, the main goal at the moment is to get into the Champions League.”
Kanchelskis’ profile would seem to match that of Antonio Conte who was linked with the United job earlier this season but has since gone to Tottenham Hotspur after they sacked Nuno Espirito Santo at the start of November.
The former Russian winger made 161 appearances for United, scoring 36 goals and winning seven trophies, including the Premier League title in 1993 and 1994.
