Andreas Christensen sends message to Thomas Tuchel ahead of Thiago Silva's return from injury

Andreas Christensen insists he will only get "better and better" the longer he remains in the Chelsea side under Thomas Tuchel.

The 24-year-old has re-established himself in the Blues defence in recent weeks in the absence of Thiago Silva, who suffered a thigh injury in the victory over Tottenham Hotspur on February 4.

Christensen replaced the Brazil international that day and helped Chelsea keep a clean sheet and secure a 1-0 victory against Jose Mourinho's side.

The Denmark international has started five of the following six matches and in those, the Blues have conceded just once – the calamitous own goal Antonio Rudiger scored against Sheffield United.

Christensen has been flawless in the heart of Chelsea's back three over the past month and he believes he is close to recapturing the form he displayed under Antonio Conte during the 2017/18 campaign.

"It’s a little bit like the team, I’m getting better and better," the Dane told Chelsea's website. "It’s been a while since I’ve had a run of games in a row, I've been a bit in and out over a long period. So for me, I’m enjoying it.

"I’m not where I probably was, but I’m getting there. So every game I’m getting better and I feel more comfortable every day. At the moment, I’m looking forward to the games and training. So I’m enjoying it."

Given Christensen's recent performances, it is by no means a guarantee that Silva will make an instant return to the starting XI when he returns from injury.

The 36-year-old has missed almost a month of action since hobbling off against Spurs but is expected to be back in first-team training this week, as confirmed by Tuchel on Friday ahead of Chelsea's 0-0 draw with Manchester United.

"He did an individual session today on the pitch and it was a big step for him," the Chelsea head coach said. "So I hope he will join the group next week."

Whether that means Silva will be available for Chelsea's next game remains to be seen.

The Blues are set to take on Liverpool at Anfield on Thursday night in what is likely to prove a key match in the battle to finish in the Premier League top four come the end of the campaign.
