Andrea Radrizzani on the fight to sign Helder Costa and why he chose Leeds United

‘Big clubs across England and Europe’ were beaten off by Leeds United for the signature of winger Helder Costa in a £10m-plus transfer.

Whites chairman and owner Andrea Radrizzani has expressed his delight at securing the club’s most expensive transfer since Robbie Fowler’s December 2001 arrival.

Jorge Mendes, the super agent behind Wolverhampton Wanderers’ rise to the top half of the Premier League, was also thanked by Radrizzani.

GestiFute, Mendes’s agency, looks after some of the world’s best footballers and a long list of Wolves assets who have driven the Molineux outfit to the Europa League.

In 2017/18, when Wolves dominated the second tier and attracted plenty of headlines for their transfer policy with Mendes, Radrizzani was a vocal critic.

The Italian also talked up his own relationship with Mendes at the time and reiterated how he would use that friendship to United’s advantage in the future.

“I’d like to thank Jeff Shi (Wolves’ executive chairman) and the player’s agent for helping us to achieve the signing of Helder,” said Radrizzani.

“He had opportunities from some big clubs across England and Europe, but he has chosen to join our race to the Premier League and make history.”
