Andrea Bocelli to live-stream Easter Sunday concert from Milan's Duomo via YouTube

Andrea Bocelli will perform a live-streamed concert from a deserted Duomo in Milan this Easter Sunday.

The famed Italian opera singer will be joined only by the cathedral’s organist, Emanuele Vianelli, as he performs a selection of pieces, including Ave Maria and Sancta Maria.

It will be streamed live to the world on Bocelli’s YouTube channel from 6pm UK time on April 12.

“On the day on which we celebrate the trust in a life that triumphs, I’m honoured and happy to answer ‘Sì’ to the invitation of the City and the Duomo of Milan,” Bocelli said.

Italy has been among the worst hit countries during the coronavirus outbreak, suffering more deaths from Covid-19 than any other nation.

In line with government regulations, the Duomo is currently closed to all, but will open its doors exceptionally for this performance by Bocelli, who has sold more than 90 million records worldwide.

Giuseppe Sala, the Mayor of Milan, said: “This year, Easter will be very different for all of us. The joyous serenity that usually comes with this day, has been greatly troubled by the pandemic we are experiencing.

“I am sure that the extraordinary voice of Bocelli will be the embrace we are missing these days, a strong, special hug, capable of warming the heart of Milan, Italy and the world.”

Bocelli will also take part in One World: Together at Home, a live-streamed concert curated by Lady Gaga and featuring the likes of Paul McCartney, Elton John and Billie Eilish.
