Derby County have confirmed Andre Wisdom was admitted to hospital after being subjected to an "unprovoked assault and robbery" in Merseyside on Sunday.
The 27-year-old, formerly of Liverpool, was taken to hospital just hours after Derby's 2-1 win over Reading. Merseyside Police are investigating the incident.
His club confirmed in a statement: "Andre Wisdom has been the victim of an unprovoked assault and robbery.
"He sustained injuries which resulted in him being admitted to hospital, where he is in a stable condition.
"Merseyside Police are investigating and the club will focus its efforts on supporting Andre and his family.
The Rams posted a picture of the defender on Twitter, with the caption: "Get well soon, Wis".
Wisdom has made 21 appearances for Derby this season and 105 in total since signing permanently for the Rams in 2017.
The defender enjoyed a successful loan period with the club in the 2013–2014 season, before returning four years later following spells with West Brom, Norwich and Red Bull Salzburg.
It was Liverpool where the Englishman started his professional career, however. He joined their academy set-up aged 14, eventually rising up the ranks and playing 22 times for the first team.
