Andre Villas-Boas details his Olivier Ntcham frustrations after Celtic star's failed French move

Andre Villas-Boas has opened up on his decision to quit Marseille after the club signed Olivier Ntcham without his backing.

The Celtic midfielder joined the French outfit on loan in January and Villas-Boas quit a day later because he was frustrated that a signing was made without asking him.

And that left him very frustrated as he decided to leave the club in a move that was a major blow to Ntcham, who struggled for game time in his homeland.

Ntcham had been looking to leave Celtic Park and Neil Lennon was happy to let him go but his move turned into a nightmare and he's been heavily linked with a move away again this summer.

And Villas-Boas has now opened up on what had gone wrong as looked back at the incident that ended his time at the club.

Speaking to The Athletic , Villas-Boas said: “One of the things we had between us was we will never sign a player without the full acceptance of the coach.

"And we reach January and we had an offer for one of our midfielders (Morgan Sanson) from Aston Villa.

“And the targets we had we kept missing them because they weren’t available or they were overpriced or when we came in we were too late. And suddenly there are no more options left.

"So the next day I wake up and we’ve signed Ntcham. Ntcham!

"I didn’t say yes to Ntcham. We had no conversation of me saying yes to Ntcham. So I go. And then the battle becomes compensation.

"We had a one-month battle to reach an agreement for me to leave for nothing, which is what I had proposed to them in the first place.”
