Andre Gomes receives late Portugal call-up as Everton youngster withdraws from international duty

Everton midfielder Andre Gomes has received a late call-up to the Portugal squad for this international break.

The 26-year-old has been reinstated to his national squad for the first time since completing a permanent move to Goodison Park in the summer from Barcelona - having previously been capped 29 times for his country.

The former Benfica and Valencia man replaces William Carvalho in Fernando Santo's squad after his withdrawal through injury. with Portugal set to face Luxembourg on Friday before a clash against Ukraine on Monday.

Gomes hasn't started a game for Everton since the 3-2 win over Wolves at the start of September which saw him sustain a rib issue, keeping him out of the Blues squad for a number of weeks.

The midfielder returned for the game against Burnley and came off the bench in the closing stages of Saturday's 1-0 win.

Elsewhere, Everton youngster Lewis Gibson has withdrawn from international duty this week.

The defender had earned a place in the England Under-20 squad for Thursday's friendly with Italy, but has returned to the Blues as he is suffering from a sickness bug.
