Players from both sides were visibly distraught as the Portuguese international left the pitch and was rushed to Aintree hosptial, where he had surgery on Monday.

Gomes is expected to make a full recovery and will now spend some time recovering in hospital.

A statement from the Blues read: "Everton Football Club can confirm Andre Gomes underwent surgery to repair a fracture dislocation to his right ankle earlier today and the procedure went extremely well.

"On behalf of Andre, the club would like to thank all Everton supporters and members of the wider football family for the overwhelming messages of support we have received since yesterday’s match."

Supporters, former Blues and lots of the wider football community have been sending their well-wishes to the midfielder over the past 24 hours.

Marco Silva commented following the match: "Andre will have all the support he needs. I am 100% sure he will become stronger as a football player and a man.

"He is a fantastic man and a fantastic professional. Our players are sad but the spirit we showed was a good answer."
