Andra Day performs Black National Anthem at Super Bowl pregame

Lift Every Voice and Sing performed by Andra Day at Super Bowl LVIII.

On Sunday, Andra Day graced the stage with a powerful and moving rendition of 'Lift Every Voice and Sing' before Super Bowl LVIII. The Grammy-winning artist and former Oscar nominee captivated the audience as she donned a stunning two-piece beige pantsuit, accessorized with elegant gold bangles, rings, and earrings. Accompanied by a chorus of singers dressed in all black, Day's performance was truly captivating.

Adding to the significance of the moment, the 2023 nominees for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award stood behind the chorus. This prestigious award recognizes players for their exceptional achievements both on and off the field, highlighting their philanthropic endeavors and contributions to their communities. The deserving recipient of the 2023 award was Cameron Heyward from the Pittsburgh Steelers, who shared a brief speech ahead of Day's performance.

Day's rendition of 'Lift Every Voice and Sing' follows in the footsteps of renowned artists such as Sheryl Lee Ralph, Mary Mary, and Alicia Keys, who have all graced the stage with their poignant interpretations of this anthem, known as the Black National Anthem. Day's talent extends beyond her vocal abilities, as she also received an Oscar nomination and won a Golden Globe for her exceptional acting debut in 2021's 'The United States vs Billie Holiday.' Moreover, she has received numerous Grammy nominations, including for her empowering song 'Rise Up' and the album it belongs to, 'Cheers to the Fall,' in 2016, as well as her song 'Stand Up for Something' on the 'Marshall' soundtrack in 2018. In 2022, she won a Grammy for the 'United States vs. Billie Holiday' soundtrack.

The rendition of 'Lift Every Voice and Sing' was meticulously produced and arranged by the Emmy-winning musical director and producer, Adam Blackstone. The performance was made even more inclusive through the addition of American Sign Language interpretations. Shaheem Sanchez, an actor and choreographer representing the National Association of the Deaf, expertly signed the powerful lyrics of the song.

The pre-show of Super Bowl LVIII had more unforgettable performances in store for the audience. Post Malone delivered a captivating rendition of 'America the Beautiful,' while Reba McEntire took the stage to perform the national anthem, leaving everyone filled with patriotic fervor.

As the Kansas City Chiefs defended their title against the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl, all eyes were on the remarkable performances unfolding at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Broadcasting live on CBS and available for streaming on Paramount+, the Super Bowl captivated fans around the world.

Overall, the combination of Andra Day's soul-stirring rendition of 'Lift Every Voice and Sing' and the morning's other captivating performances set an incredibly powerful and emotionally charged tone for Super Bowl LVIII. It is moments like these that remind us of the profound impact of music and the ability of artists to unite us through their remarkable talents.
