Andie MacDowell says manager tried to talk her out of embracing her grey hair

Andie MacDowell stepped onto the red carpet with a stunning new look.

The Groundhog Day star debuted her foxy salt-and-pepper hair at the Cannes Film Festival in the south of France two days ago.

It's a bold step for the former brunette and L'Oreal spokesmodel who used to advertise hair dye "because she's worth it" .

The 63-year-old revealed that not everyone had been happy for her to ditch the dye.

She said: "My managers had actually said to me, 'It's not time.' And I said, 'I think you're wrong, and I'm going to be more powerful if I embrace where I am right now. It's time because in two years I'm going to be 65. If I don't do it now, I won't have the chance to be salt and pepper."

"I always wanted to be salt and pepper!" she added.

Andie, who lives in California and has three grown-up children, Justin, 35, Rainey, 31, and Margaret, 26, told Vogue why she was glad to be grey.

"At the very beginning of lockdown, my hair started growing and every time my kids would see me, they kept telling me I looked badass with my grey hair, " she revealed.

"When I pulled it up in a bun, all you could see was the salt and pepper, which is what I am, you know, dark and silver."

She pointed out that while it was still considered shocking for a woman to show that she has grey hair, when it comes to men, particularly in Hollywood, they're praised for the distinguished look.

Andie continued: "I like to compare myself to George Clooney because why not? I've been saying for a while now it was time for me, personally, to make that transition."

She added that while she didn't have any doubts herself, she was concerned what other people might think.

The Four Weddings star admitted: "At first, I was cautious because I didn't want anybody to be upset, and I was trying to figure out how I could wear wigs to please people.

"But once I did it, it was just so clear to me that my instincts were right.

"I've never felt more powerful. I feel more honest. I feel like I'm not pretending. I feel like I'm embracing right where I am."
