VIZIANAGARAM: A 26-year-old-woman was allegedly raped by a 20-year-old youth at her residence in the district headquarters town of Vizianagaram in Andhra Pradesh on Monday night.
The victim — who belonged to Parvathipuram Manyam district — had come to Vizianagaram town in search of livelihood.
The police said that the "woman has separated from her husband and she has been staying along with her two children" in a rented house for the past few months.
On Monday night, a male friend of the woman offered her a lift on his bike.
When the woman, along with her male friend, went inside the house, three other youngsters, all below 20 years of age, knocked on the door.
When she opened the door, one of them entered the house and asked the woman’s male friend to leave the place.
Later, he raped the woman and fled the spot.
The woman, along with a few others, approached the police on Tuesday morning.
Vizianagaram police chief Deepika Patil said that the police have identified the accused, who is known to the victim.
“We have taken the accused into our custody for interrogation,” she added.
A case has been registered and the investigation is on.
“Though one of the three youngsters is involved in the rape, we will register cases against the trio for supporting the crime,” the police chief added.
The woman was shifted to the government hospital for medical tests.
Telugu Desam Party leaders and activists alleged that crime against the women has been increasing in the state and the "police have failed" to prevent the crimes.
