Andhra Pradesh: Transport sector posts 58% revenue growth

AMARAVATI: Making a resounding recovery, the transport sector in the state reported massive growth in revenue collections during the first quarter of the current fiscal.

The revenue from the transport sector during the first quarter crossed the record Rs.1,000 crore mark for the first time. This is almost 58 per cent growth over the corresponding period during the last fiscal.

Although revenue during 2021-22 were hit by the Covid-19 second wave, the growth rate of nearly 60 per cent was unexpected. The state pocketed around Rs.1034 crore in the first quarter (2022) against Rs.651 crore made during April-June of 2021.

The revenue from life tax on vehicle sales jumped to Rs.589 crore from Rs.391 crore during the last year. Similarly, revenue from quarterly fees reported a growth of 56 per cent as they stood at Rs.289 crore. This is up from Rs.185 crore during the last year. The revenue from the transport fees has witnessed a jump of 68 per cent as the reported collected Rs.73 crore against the last year’s first-quarter collections of Rs.43 crore.

Interestingly, the crackdown on illegal movement of vehicles and transport of quantities more than the permitted loads has yielded massive revenue to the government. The transport department tightened enforcement across the state to make around Rs.64 crore against Rs.17 crore collected during the last year. The enforcement wing alone reported about 265 per cent growth rate.

“We have directed field teams to be alert about movement of unauthorised loads and vehicles without requisite permissions. We are monitoring enforcement activities across the state as we are expecting decent revenue from the arrest of pilferage,” transport commissioner K Rajababu told ‘TOI.’
