Andhra Pradesh: Three fishermen die as boat capsizes at sea in Srikakulam district

SRIKAKULAM: Three fishermen, including a son and father, died when a country-made boat capsized in sea off the coast of Bhandaruvanipeta under Gara Mandal in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh in the wee hours on Saturday due to strong gale and high time.

The deceased were identified as Pukkala Yerayya (27) and his father Pukkalla Gannaya (50) and Rayathi Narayana Swamy (55).

The police said that the three fishermen belonging to Bhandaruvanipeta village on Saturday went to sea for fishing in their country-made boat.

While trying to sail through the high-tide area to go deep into the sea, they lost control over the boat due to strong wind and the boat turned upside down.

As they tried to swim across to the coast, their efforts proved futile, and the trio drowned in the waters and died.

The police said that two bodies of two fishermen were washed ashore on the shore near Gullavanipalem under Polaki Mandal and the dead body of Yerayya was washed ashore near Matsyalesham coast.

The police shifted the bodies to the government hospital for postmortem.

A pall of gloom descended on fishermen villages of Gara Mandal.

Animal husbandry and fisheries minister Sidiri Appalaraju spoke to the officials of the various department over the incident, and he assured that the state government would take steps to financial assistance and few others support to the family members of the deceased fishermen.
