Andhra Pradesh: SI put in vacancy reserve for ‘thrashing’ complainant

Chilamathur police station sub-inspector Rangadu Yadav has been put in vacancy reserve for allegedly thrashing a complainant a few days ago.

Anantapur Range Deputy Inspector General (DIG) M. Ravi Prakash conducted a preliminary inquiry into the incident after a video of the SI thrashing a complainant at Chilamathur police station in Sri Sathya Sai district went viral in social media.

“Custodial violence will not be tolerated. No police personnel will be spared if such complaints are proved to be true. Complainants or accused cannot be called to police station and confined there in the name of interrogation without reason,” said the DIG.

Women and children should not be kept in police stations during the night, he pointed out.

Staff Reporter from Vijayawada adds: Meanwhile, Telugu Desam Party  (TDP) Polit Bureau member Varla Ramaiah has urged the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to take action against the sub-inspector and a YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) leader, alleging that the duo had assaulted son of a differently-abled woman.

In a letter to the NHRC Chairperson on Tuesday, Mr. Ramaiah said that the SI had assaulted the complainant in the presence of public at Chilamathur police station and that evidence was available for the same.

The TDP leader said that Padmavati, belonging to a blackward classes (Yadav) community from Sanjeevaraya Palem village in Chilamathru mandal, had been getting differently-abled pension for many years.

“The YSRCP leaders stopped her pension, saying that her family is not in favour of the ruling party. Her son, G. Venugopal, aged about 35 years, approached a YSRCP leader, Damodar Reddy who attacked and abused him. Mr. Damodar Reddy also threatened that Padmavati would not get the pension till they changed their political affiliations,” alleged Mr. Ramaiah.

The TDP leader alleged that Mr. Damodar Reddy lodged a false complaint against Mr. Venugopal at Chilamathur police station. “Knowing this, Mr. Venugopal approached the Chilamathur police with a written complaint, stating the facts. Sub-Inspector Rangadu Yadav beat up Mr. Venugopal and hurled unparliamentary language at him,” alleged Mr. Ramamiah.

He urged the NHRC to conduct an inquiry and take appropriate action.
