Andhra Pradesh’s recidivism rate 2nd highest in south India

VISAKHAPATNAM: Recidivism (the tendency of a criminal to reoffend) in Andhra Pradesh accounts for 6.1% of cases among persons arrested under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), placing the state second in southern India after Telangana in 2020, as per data from the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report.

Under the category of special and local laws (SLL), Andhra Pradesh ranked first among southern states with 8% of recidivism.

NCRB data states 1,26,736 people, including 825 juveniles, were apprehended under IPC offences in Andhra Pradesh in 2020. Of the arrests, 1,18,258 adults were arrested for the first time, 885 adults had a record of previous conviction whereas 6,768 people were arrested but not convicted in the past.

Of the juveniles apprehended under IPC sections in 2020, 733 were apprehended for the first time, 74 were apprehended but not convicted and 18 juveniles had a record of precious conviction.

The data says that 39,769 persons, including 75 juveniles. were arrested under SLL offences, in the state. Of the total arrests, 36,528 adults were arrested for the first time, 1,021 had a record of previous conviction and 2,145 were arrested but not convicted in the past. Similarly, 73 juveniles were appended for the first time whereas two were arrested but not convicted in the past.

A senior police officer said the number of first-time offenders is increasing due to reasons such as making easy money through illegal means, financial issues.
