Andhra Pradesh: RTC driver accused of sexual assault attempt

VIJAYAWADA: The driver of an RTC bus allegedly attempted to sexually assault a woman passenger late on Wednesday. The woman managed to fight him off with help from another passenger.

In her complaint to the RTC, the woman states that the bus left Nellore on Wednesday night. When it reached Ongole, there were two male passengers besides herself. The bus driver handed over the wheel to another driver, switched off the lights and addressed the woman in a rude fashion. When she rebuked him, he covered her mouth and attempted to sexually assault her. At this point, the woman called out to a male passenger for help. The passenger reprimanded the driver, who then verbally abused him.

Meanwhile, the woman called up her husband in Anakapalle. Her husband phoned his manager in Vijayawada, who rushed to Pandit Nehru Bus Station.

The victim lodged a complaint with RTC authorities. Regional manager M Y Danam instructed the officers to suspend the driver and inform Nellore depot authorities.

The manager who received the woman in Vijayawada complained that departmental action should be taken against the driver.
