Andhra Pradesh: One held for abetment to suicide

VIJAYAWADA: Police on Friday arrested the accused in the case related to the suicide of a village organisation assistant, Nagalakshmi (42), in Bhogireddipalli.

Police said Nagalakshmi ended her life due to harassment by a local leader, Garikipati Narasimha Rao.

According to police, Nagalakshmi was the leader of 37 self-help groups and bookkeeper, apart from the leader of mandal VOA Union. She used to enter the details of the loans taken by group members in the book.

Garikipati Nagamani, a member of the Sri Brhamarambika group, one of the 37 groups, used to quarrel with Nagalakshmi regarding allotment of loans to the former’s group members. Later, Nagamani complained to the superiors and joined another village self-help group.

Later, Nagamani’s husband Garikipati Narasimha Rao, a local politician, started allegedly harassing Nagalakshmi regarding details of her group loans and savings. According to police, the former verbally abused Nagalakshmi.

Nagalakshmi lodged a complaint on February 24. Police called Narasimha Rao and his wife, Nagamani, to the station and let them go after counseling.

Nagalakshmi complained to the SP in the Spandana programme, where the SP assured justice and a case was registered in Bandar Rural police station on Wednesday.

On Wednesday evening, Nagalakshmi drank pesticide. Nagalakshmi’s son Garikipati Partha Shiva Sai rushed her to hospital where she died on Thursday.
