GUNTUR: Tension prevailed in Narasaraopet following the arrest of TDP leaders on Saturday.
TDP constituency in-charge Dr Chadalavada Aravinda Babu was rushed to hospital after he fell unconscious during the police lathicharge. Dr Aravind Babu, who was found struggling to breathe, is recovering in the hospital.
The trouble started when the local legislator Dr Gopireddy Srinivasa Reddy of YSRC staged dharna in Jonnalagadda village on Friday demanding the arrest of TDP activists for removing YSR statue from the centre. MLA alleged local TDP cadres deliberately demolished the statue. Police arrested a few TDP activists immediately after MLA’s dharna which led to tense situation in village.
TDP constituency in-charge Dr Aravind Babu reached the village along with the scores of party workers on Saturday and staged rastaroko. He demanded immediate release of the party activists who were arrested without any investigation. TDP leaders threatened to continue the protest till the police withdraw the false cases against their party workers and release them unconditionally.
Taking note of the situation, police resorted to mild latchicharge which resulted in jostling among TDP cadres. In the melee, Dr Aravind Babu fell unconscious resulting in further tension in the area.
Police immediately summoned an ambulance and made an arrangement to shift Dr Aravind Babu to a hospital. However, YSRC activists reached the spot and hurled stones at the ambulance and also at TDP activists. TDP supremo Chandrababu Naidu strongly condemned the attack on ambulance.
