Andhra Pradesh: Nandyal district is bigger than residual Kurnool

The newly formed Nandyal district is larger than the residual Kurnool. The new district has 29 mandal when compared to 26 in the residual one. Of the five mandals in Panyam Assembly constituency, two—Panyam and Gudivemula — have gone to Nandyal district while the rest remain with Kurnool.

Manazir Jeelani Samoon, a 2012 IAS batch officer who was working as the Joint Collector (Development) in Kurnool, has been appointed the first Collector of Nandyal district. Similarly, 2018 IAS batch officer Narapureddy Mourya who was working as Kurnool Joint Collector (Housing) has been appointed Joint Collector of Nandyal.

Kurnool Collector P. Koteswar Rao, Joint Collector S. Ramsundar Reddy and Superintendent of Police Ch. Sudheer Kumar Reddy have been retained.

Despite resistance from the people and Rayalaseema Saguneeti Sadhana Samithi to setting up of the ‘transit Collectorate’ at the Regional Agriculture Research Station (RARS) at Nandyal, it has been decided that the new offices would start functioning from the premises from Monday.

Nandyal district will comprise six Assembly constituencies —Nandyal, Allagadda, Srisailam, Banaganapalle, Dhone and Nandikotkur. In addition to existing revenue divisions of Nandyal (with nine mandals) and Dhone (eight mandals), Atmakur division has been created with 10 mandals. The new district spreads over 9,681 square kilometre with a population of 17.82 lakh.

The residual Kurnool district will have eight Assembly constituencies —Panyam, Kodumuru, Prattikonda, Yemiganur, Kurnool, Adoni, Aluru and Mantralayam. There are 11 mandals in Kurnool revenue division, 17 in Adoni and Pattikonda (new) divisions put-together. The district now spreads over 7,981 square kilometre with a population of 22.71 lakh.
