Andhra Pradesh: Friendly policing top of govt's agenda, asserts home minister

AMARAVATI: Home minister Taneti Vanitha on Monday said that friendly policing was a priority for the state government. She said chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has laid emphasis on police establishing close ties with people for ensuring a peaceful environment in state.

Vanitha assumed charge as home minister in the secretariat on Monday. The minister signed on the file to grant early permission to family members of those languishing in prisons to meet in prescribed time slots. The minister asked the the prisons department to show empathy for the kin of prisoners during their visit.

Speaking to the media, the home minister said that the state police have won several prestigious national awards for friendly policing implemented in the last three years. “Our government is committed to protect the democratic rights of every citizen in the state. Police should never behave rudely with people, particularly common man,” said the minister.

She said that police should refrain from being harsh with those visiting the stations as it was their duty to protect the interests of the victims. The minister said that they could save the lives of about 900 women through Disha mobile application.

She said that about 1.13 crore people have already downloaded Disha application and utilizing the services of the police during the emergencies. “We will take all measures to ensure transparency, accountability and responsibility among police personnel to make the police department people-friendly,” said Vanitha.

Principal secretary Kumar Viswajith, G Vijay Kumar DG (prisons) Ahsan Reja, DIGs Trivikram Varma and Rasekhar were present. Health and family welfare minister Vidadala Rajani assumed charge on Monday and said that they would make AP Arogyandra Pradesh as per the vision of the chief minister
