Andhra Pradesh: Abandoned baby girl found in drain near hospital in Chittoor, rescued by locals

VISAKHAPATNAM: A newborn was found abandoned in a narrow open drain near Government Area Hospital at Palamaner in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh on Sunday. The newborn girl was rescued by the locals.

The police said that the passers-by heard the cries of an infant from a drain and found the baby girl lying in a few inches of sewage. The girl was taken to the nearby hospital, where she was given emergency care.

The medical staff of the hospital and locals said that a woman came to the hospital on Sunday morning and claimed that her baby died. However, a few days after her claim, a newborn baby was found in a drain and the infant was brought to the hospital. Except for some bruises, the infant was healthy.

It appeared that a woman who came to the hospital and admitted herself was indeed the mother of the abandoned infant. The police said that they will examine CCTV camera footage from around the hospital and surrounding area to find out who abandoned the baby in the drain.

The police said that the baby girl may have been born to an unwed mother. They will register a case under Section 317 (exposure and abandonment of child under twelve years, by parent or person having care of it) of the IPC for further investigation into the case.
