Anderson Cooper says that a tweet from his account calling President Donald Trump a “pathetic loser” wasn’t him, and that he had been hacked.
After the President tweeted that he had originally endorsed Senator Luther Strange in the Alabama Senate Republican primary, and not Roy Moore — who lost in a stunning upset Tuesday night to a Democrat — an unusual tweet came from Cooper’s account.
“Oh Really? You endorsed him you tool! Pathetic loser,” the tweet read.
CNN Communications tweeted that Cooper’s account had been compromised, and that they were working with Twitter to secure the account.
Cooper himself later tweeted that he “woke up to find out someone gained access” to the account, and claimed that he hadn’t even been active on the social media platform in a while. “I have not sent a tweet in days or replied to any tweets. We are looking into how this happened.”
The tweets came after Democrat Doug Jones beat Mr Moore in the Alabama Senate runoff election that was triggered when Mr Trump named Jeff Sessions, who used to hold the seat, as attorney general. Mr Moore’s defeat followed weeks of scandal after reports indicated that he had pursued a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl and other teenagers when he was in his 30s.
“The reason I originally endorsed Luther Strange (and his numbers went up mightily), is that I said Roy Moore will not be able to win the General Election. I was right! Roy worked hard but the deck was stacked against him!” Mr Trump tweeted following the results, attracting the hacked Cooper message.
Mr Trump did not immediately stand by Mr Moore following the allegations against the Republican, but he did not condemn him either. As the election neared, Mr Trump eventually did endorse the candidate, hoping to keep the current Republican majority in the Senate.
