Ander Herrera sends message to David De Gea after Man Utd Europa League heartache

David De Gea had yet another night to forget as his drab penalty record continued against Villarreal.

After four years without a trophy, Manchester United had the opportunity of winning the Europa League final and they were the favourites.

Yet after a 1-1 draw in the match, the game went to penalties and both teams stepped up to the occasion.

It eventually came down the goalkeepers after both Gerónimo Rulli and De Gea conceded all 10 from outfield players and had to step up to the spot themselves.

While Rulli slid his effort into the top-right corner past United's Number 1, De Gea had his attempt saved, handing Unai Emery's side the trophy and breaking United hearts.

Although De Gea has come under huge scrutiny and criticism, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer defended his goalkeeper, despite his record of facing 40 penalties without saving one, a run dating back to April 2016.

United players have also sent messages of support to De Gea, including former midfielder Ander Herrera, who won the Europa League alongside the Spanish keeper in 2017, and teammate Juan Mata.

Herrera wrote, which translated to: "Soccer has given me friends for life, always by your side,"

Mata simply wrote: "WE win and WE lose. Always together. Always with you.

De Gea replied to both with simple heart emojis, acknowledging their kind words.

After the game, Solskjaer admitted he considered making a change before the shoot-out.

"You go through every scenario, of course, and it [bringing on Henderson] had crossed my mind in the build-up to the game, but we were confident in David and prepared," he told the press.

"Anything can happen in a penalty shootout, so I stuck with the keeper who had played all of the game."

There has been uncertainty surrounding United's goalkeeping situation over the second half of the season with Henderson and De Gea both getting game time.

Mirror Sport understands that Henderson is likely to start next season as United's No.1 after De Gea's Europa League mishap.

That will inevitably lead to speculation over De Gea's future after a decade at Old Trafford.

But United could find it hard to shift the 30-year-old, who is on £350,000-a-week and has two years left on his contract, with the option for an extra 12 months.

United have also been linked with a move into the transfer market to address their goalkeeping situation including links with a move for Jan Oblak from Atletico Madrid.
