Ander Herrera's Man Utd gift has changed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's season

Former Manchester United star Ander Herrera played a major role in Edinson Cavani signing for the Red Devils last summer.

The revelation comes to light as the Uruguay international signs a new contract that keeps him at the club for another season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been desperate to keep hold of the 34-year-old, who penned a one-year deal on deadline day.

The Norwegian has been blown away by Cavani's recent form, who has scored eight in seven matches.

And the veteran star could not have entered a purple patch at a better time with goals taking United to the Europa League final and helping his club consolidate a spot in the top four of the Premier League.

Herrera played with Cavani at Paris Saint-Germain last season and convinced him to sign for the Red Devils when they became interested in his services, as revealed by the striker himself.

He said: "I have a lot of admiration for Ander, for the kind of person he is and I had the feeling that his words were going to help me out, by telling me a bit about what it was like at United.

"And so, yes, it’s true that after I’d finished talking with Ander, we came to an agreement here with the club."

With Anthony Martial injured, Cavani has stepped up at a perfect time for United with Gary Neville revealing why the forward has had a major impact on this season.

He said on Sky Sports: “We questioned at the beginning whether he actually could do it for Manchester United, but he’s done it and I’m delighted he’s going to be at Manchester United next season.

“They’re a better team with him in it. I think he’s in the best team. Always in great positions, the timing of his runs and finishing from those positions is the best in the league.

“His heading is absolutely wonderful, his work ethic, his all-around performance, his impact on others, and it’s filled a hole for Manchester United.

“Martial has been injured, Rashford is better on the left, Greenwood’s not been quite ready. Without him this season would’ve been completely different.

“I suppose it does beg the question about what Manchester United’s plans are for next season but I’m glad he’s part of it.”
