Ander Herrera explains why he "couldn't have played" for another English club after leaving Manchester United

Former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has explained why he "couldn't have played" for another English club after choosing to leave the Red Devils earlier in the summer.

Signed from Athletic Bilbao in 2014, the 29-year-old made over 180 appearances for the club before opting to join Paris Saint-Germain on a free this summer following the expiration of his contract.

Back in March, The Daily Mail reported that Arsenal were interested in luring the Spaniard to the Emirates. However, the midfielder has revealed that joining another English team was not an option after his United exit was confirmed.

"Honestly, I could not see myself playing with another English club," Herrera told France Football. "When you've played at Manchester United, it's hard to go anywhere else."

The midfielder admitted his admiration for United - labelling them as the "biggest club in the UK" - as well as revealing which club remains closest to his heart.

He said: "I was happy to play for Athletic Bilbao, another club that is dear to me and for Manchester United, the biggest club in the UK, where I felt loved.

"But I can't lie; the team of my heart, forever, is Real Zaragoza, who I supported as a child and where I started my career."

United are yet to sign a replacement for the former Spain international but have been heavily linked with a move for Newcastle United youngster Sean Longstaff.

However, the MEN understands the pursuit of the 21-year-old has gone cold, with United unwilling to pay the £50million asking price.
