And the nation's favourite ice lolly is...

The nation's favourite ice lolly has been revealed.

As sunny Manchester sizzles in record temperatures with the rest of the country, the results of a new lip-smacking poll are sure to divide opinion.

According to pollsters at YouGov, more than one in four Brits with a favoured ice lolly said it was...a Magnum.

The chocolaty old favourite trumped Fab lollies, Soleros, Twisters and Feasts by some distance.

But it appears to be an age thing.

The results showed 28 per cent of people surveyed plumped for the Magnum, but just 12 per cent of 18-24 year olds named it as their favourite compared to 42 per cent in the 65-plus category.

The survey found Magnums are more than three times as popular as their nearest rivals, joint second-placed Fabs and Soleros.

Following them were Twisters, Feats, Calippo, orange lollies, Cornetto, Fruit Pastilles, Mivvi and Rockets.

Strawberry splits, Mini-milks and Nobbly Bobbly also featured on the list - although just one per cent of people surveyed voted for them.

Magnums, Fabs, Twisters and Fruit Pastilles lollies were most popular with the younger generation.

Older lolly lovers went for Magnum and the humble plain orange lolly.

The data from YouGov Omnibus also highlights the dominance of Walls in the nation's ice lolly market.

Four out of the five top ice lollies are all Walls brands.

As for the debate over what constitutes and ice cream or an ice lolly, we'll leave that to you.

But YouGov said respondents to the survey answered in their own words rather than choosing from a list of pre-selected options.
