And Just like That creator addresses Carrie's 911 blunder in opening episode

Those who have watched the first episode of Sex and The City reboot And Just Like That have been left questioning why one beloved character suddenly died.

Other questions cropping up have been why Carrie didn't immediately call 911 and why Peloton was involved in the death scene - with The Independent reporting that stock prices dropped overnight after the episode aired.

At the end of the first episode of the new show, Carrie (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) comes home from a piano recital to find Mr. Big (Chris Noth) collapsed on the floor after suffering a heart attack while using a Peloton exercise bike.

Carrie then comforts her husband in his final moments before he dies, something that has been criticised by fans who believe she could have got him medical help in this time.

The shocking twist to the opening episode was part of the creative team's aim to set the new season apart from the classic Sex And The City.

Show developer Michael Patrick King has now admitted that nobody would want to return to the show if the dynamic hadn't changed.

This meant that killing off Mr. Big was the intention going into the show, and that's why Carrie didn't immediately get him help.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, the show's creator said: "Dying was the origin story. Nobody wanted to come back if [the show] was not going to be different.

"When I told Chris that Mr. Big dies in the first episode, he definitely knew it wasn’t [going to be the] same. And we had to talk about it. "

Michael went on to say how understanding Chris was about the importance of the character arc, with him admitting that he wouldn't have done the show had Mr. Big not died in the last five minutes of the first episode.

Michael felt it was important to explore what it would be like for Carrie to be single at 55, calling it a "whole new ballpark".

He said: "It’s also really interesting to me, because 55 and single is a whole new ballpark. You thought 35 and single was a story. 55 and single is a story as well."

When asked about why the brand Peloton was involved during the death scene, Michael said that Peloton had "nothing to do with the heart attack".

He went on to say that the popular exercise bike was used to reflect modern society and "show that Mr. Big was current", highlighting that the older cast are still "alive and vibrant".

When the creative team thought about what Mr Big would be doing during the pandemic, they agreed that he would be listening to his record collection and exercising at home which was their motivation behind the "titan-of-the-world spa bathroom".

Michael said: "[We] put the signature item that you would have in that at home, which is a Peloton. I ride it all the time, not in a bathroom like that. . .When Carrie carried a Fendi bag, that was the bag of the moment.

"Peloton is the bike of the moment. The heart attack happened off the bike."
