An insider has spilled on the reason behind the cancellation of And Just Like That, weeks after showrunners announced it would be concluding after its third season.
ICYMI, HBO producers of the Sex and the City spinoff revealed earlier this month that the show would come to an end after season three, with lead star Sarah Jessica Parker among those to respond to the news on social media.
“Carrie Bradshaw has dominated my professional heartbeat for 27 years. I think I have loved her most of all,” Parker, who portrayed the columnist-turned-podcaster in both shows, wrote on Instagram.

At the time, there was no official reason given for the show’s cancellation beyond it reaching its natural conclusion, with writer and director Michael Patrick King saying that season three felt like “a wonderful place to stop”.
Now, however, a source has come forward to shed more light on the axing, telling Radar Online that the show’s price tag was too high, especially given its gradually declining ratings across all three seasons.
“Publicly, HBO Max said a lot of positive things about the show,” the source claimed, “but behind the scenes, they’re saying it was a gamble that didn’t pay off”.
In terms of gambling, Variety reports that the first season of And Just Like That had a budget of $10 million ($15.2 million AUD) per episode for its first season, which when compared with the diminishing ratings, and viewers dubbing it a ‘hate-watch’, left little room for future instalments.
While the source claims HBO execs felt short-changed by And Just Like That, the show certainly generated buzz throughout its three-season run.

From gaping plot holes that required HBO to weigh in, to surprise cameos from ousted Sex and the City star Kim Cattrall, and multiple shock cast exits, the show had a knack for making headlines, even if that didn’t necessarily translate to viewership.
“The symphony of all those emotions has been the greatest soundtrack and most consequential companion,” Parker wrote following the show’s cancellation.
“Therefore the most sentimental and profound gratitude and lifetime of debt.”
