Runners begin the first leg of the Tokyo-Hakone Intercollegiate Ekiden in front of the Yomiuri Shimbun's head office in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, on Thursday. Aoyama Gakuin University won in the first half of the prestigious two-day college road relay, which travels from Tokyo to Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, and back again for a total of 217.1 kilometers.
