KANCHANABURI: An ancient wall - a tourist attraction in this storied western town - was partly damaged after a large tamarind tree more than 100 years old, crashed down on it early Sunday.
Prapruet Maliphon, 75, a resident who lives on Lak Muang road near the wall in Kanchanaburi town, said he heard a thunderous noise at about 2am but did not leave his house to take a look.
After daybreak he found the old tamarind tree lying on the wall, leaving a crack along its base. Nobody was hurt.
The wall was built in 1884 during the reign of King Rama III. It was last renovated about 15 years ago.
Mr Prapruet said the fallen tree should be removed as soon as possible. After that, the Muang Kanchanaburi Municipality must work with the Fine Arts Department to repair the damage, he added.
Benjawan Premprayoon, the city mayor, examined the damage with officials from the disaster prevention and mitigation and public works offices on Sunday . The spot has been cordoned off to protect people from possible danger.
She said the municipality will coordinate repairs with the Fine Arts Department.
