'Ancient' Scottish town built around abbey ruins named one of the UK's best

A TOWN in Scotland, built around "magnificent" abbey ruins, has been named one of the highest-rated places to visit in the UK

The consumer watchdog Which? carried out a survey of some 9000 of its members on everything from the scenery to the culinary experiences on offer at dozens of inland towns.

The locations featured only included small towns and villages with "rural charm" and "quirky, independent spirits."

Discussing the location, Which? said the town, which is overlooked by the three peaks of the Eildon Hills, is a "small" and "ancient" settlement built around the ruins of Melrose Abbey.

Established in 1136, the abbey still houses the heart of national hero Robert the Bruce.

The St Cuthbert’s Way, a 62-mile-long walk to Holy Island, also starts at the abbey.

There are also some more leisurely walks available nearby, including the "beautiful" Priorwood and Harmony Garden routes.

Melrose is also a great place to go for wander while enjoying a lovely beverage at one of the countless tea rooms.

The abbey is a popular draw for those coming to the town, with travellers on Tripadvisor giving the spot a 4.5/5 out of 1226 reviews.

Another said: "We very much enjoyed our visit to Melrose Abbey and museum despite the fact that part of the abbey was fenced off.

"We spent about one hour and 15 minutes there and consider the entrance fee to be value for money."
