Ancient ruins in nature reserve grounds set to become tourist attraction

Ancient ruins in the grounds of Lochwinnoch's RSPB nature reserve are set to become a new tourist attraction with the charity now able to access cash to renovate them.

The RSPB received a funding offer of £120,000 from Historic Environment Scotland (HES) and the National Lottery Heritage Fund to develop the 16th century Peel Tower, which was originally built by the Semple family as an outpost to defend their territory.

However, the charity found it did not have a lease secure enough to accept the funding.

But at the latest meeting of the council's infrastructure, land, and environment board, elected members resolved to amend the agreement meaning the charity will now be able to rejuvenate the relic and make it safe for people to visit.

Councillor Andy Doig, who represents Lochwinnoch, said he hoped the move would attract more people to the village and help boost the area's economic recovery.

He said: “I am delighted the council has approved the amendment of the current lease to realise the development of a key historic site.

"The RSPB approached me in February this year to support them with the amendment of the lease they have with the council. I was able to approach officers and get an agreement reached.

“Given that a new approach is afoot to refresh the promotion of Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park, which is one of the top tourist attractions in Renfrewshire, I think the proximity of the renovated Peel Tower to Castle Semple will radically increase the tourism offer which Lochwinnoch as a community can offer to people right across the West of Scotland.

“With high community involvement and the support of the RSPB working in partnership with Clyde Muirshiel, I can see the Peel Tower project as a key factor in boosting the local economic recovery for a range of small businesses in and around Lochwinnoch as we recover from Covid."

The ruins of the tower stand on the southern shore of Castle Semple Loch at Aird Meadow.

It is understood archeological research will be part of the overall project and the charity will seek to involve the community in the renovation.
