Ancient hill fort damaged by people riding off road motorbikes and lighting fires

Damage has been caused to an ancient North Somerset hillfort – by people using it to ride motorbikes and light campfires.

The damage at the Iron Age Worlebury Camp hillfort has been caused over the past few weeks during the UK wide Government lockdown.

Incidents have been reported of people using the site as an off road motorbike track.

Parts of it have also been dug up and a number of campfires lit.

The hillfort situated on Worlebury Hill overlooking Weston-super-Mare is a Scheduled Monument due to it being an ‘outstanding example of its class’, meaning it has the highest heritage protection.

The damage caused is a criminal offence under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979 and has been reported to the police.

North Somerset Council owns the hillfort and has put up temporary signs reminding visitors that any damage to the monument is prohibited.

The council’s Heritage and Regeneration Champion, Councillor John Crockford-Hawley, said: “It’s really disappointing to hear of this damage, especially as such incredible work has been undertaken by the volunteers in opening up new areas of the hillfort for residents and visitors to appreciate.

“It’s important that we cherish and enjoy our local heritage and council staff work in partnership with local groups to ensure the site is safe and looked after.

“Hopefully by reminding people that these actions are a criminal offence, there will be no further damage.”

People taking their daily exercise in the area who may witness any damage being caused are urged to contact police either on 999 if the crime is in progress or on 101 if the suspect is no longer at the scene.

People can also email reports of damage to DM.Archaeology@n-somerset.gov.uk.
