Anchorman star Fred Willard passes away at 86

Anchorman, Austin Powers and Spinal Tap star Fred Willard has signed off, aged 86.

The Best In Show actor's death from natural causes was confirmed to American publication Rolling Stone by Glenn Schwartz, his rep.

The much loved American actor was well known for his roles in Christopher Guest mockumentaries like A Mighty Wind, For Your Consideration and This Is Spinal Tap.

He also recently appeared on the hit series Modern Family and starred in the American Pie series.

The news was first shared by actress Jamie Lee Curtis, the wife of Willard's longtime collaborator Guest, on Twitter.

She said: "How lucky that we all got to enjoy Fred Willard's gifts.

"He is with his missed Mary now. Thanks for the deep belly laughs Mr. Willard."

His wife of 40 years, Mary, died in 2018.

While Fred was famous for his cheeky dog show host in Best In Show, and his Emmy-nominated roles on Modern Family and Everybody Loves Raymond, Willard had an illustrious television career dating back to 1966.

As well as Get Smart, The Bob Newhart Show, Laverne & Shirley, and The Love Boat, he appeared in Golden Girls, Roseanne, Married... with Children, Lois & Clark, Mad About You and Ally McBeal.

His daughter Hope Mulbarger, said in a statement: "He kept moving, working and making us happy until the very end. We loved him so very much! We will miss him forever."
