Bob Wiltfong spent "10 years of hell" as an award-winning TV news anchorman in the US. His show features footage from that career, broadcasting for stations from Kansas to Louisiana to New York. It's remarkable how, even when subject to such mild scrutiny, TV news coverage is exposed as inane, bordering on the downright evil.
It's funny to watch the amiable Wiltfong playing hard-nosed hack on the clips - then see him grow more subversive, as his frustration with TV journalism mounts. But one or two passages are less amusing than he thinks. And latterly, the show is more mea culpa confessional than comedy. He tells a story about the time he shopped a convicted paedophile trying to rebuild his life after prison. It's so monstrous, you don't feel like laughing again for some time afterwards.
But Wiltfong doesn't want you to. Because his show isn't only about wry reflections on TV news. It's about having the courage to be who you want to be. He illustrates this with a story about his father that upsets Wiltfong so much, he cries, which is a little unsettling. But the vehemence (and, ultimately, good cheer) with which he rejects news and embraces comedy is invigorating.
